Amines

Arkema announced May 1, 2007 the sale of its global alkylalkanolamine (AAA), and its North American diethylhydroxylamine (DEHA) and, certain basic alkylamine (AA) businesses, and related assets to Taminco, a privately owned company headquartered in Belgium.  Please click here for further information.

Description

Arkema has been producing amines, including alkyl amines, alkyl alkanolamines and alkylhydroxylamines, for over 50 years. Arkema manufactures a wide variety of alkylamines from C2 through C5; these amines include mono, diisopropylamine and mono, di, triethylamine as well as foundry amines: dimethyethylamine (DMEA), dimethylisopropyllamine (DMIPA).

We are the world's leading manufacturer of Diethylhydoxylamine (DEHA) which under its brand name, Pennstop®, is widely used as a polymerization inhibitor and oxygen scavenger. We also produce many specialty amines used in the coatings or pharmaceutical markets.

Properties

  • Amines, because of their nitrogen(s) atom(s) are used for their basicity, giving them pH control ability or catalysis efficiency when proton trapping is needed. Amines are generally known for their nucleophily, giving them condensation reactivity or ring opening capability (epoxies). Also Amines, for their electron donating capacity, usually demonstrate good corrosion inhibition, metals being acceptors

  • AlkylAmines (AA) sold by Arkema are basic, many nucleophilic

  • Some Specialty Amines combine those properties as they contain several different amine functions (different basicities, different responses on the same molecule, ex. Tri-amine DMAPAPA)

  • Alkylhydroxylamines are oxygen scavengers and radical scavengers. Although they are weaker bases than AA or AAA they can contribute to increasing pH, reinforcing generally the pH action of other amines.

Markets and applications

Amines can be used in an amazing array of industries and applications. The following is a partial list:

Applications and Industries:

  • Agrochemical:
Alkylamines are important chemical intermediates used in the manufacture of many types of herbicides and pesticides
  • Pharmaceuticals: building blocks or catalysts
  • Cosmetics: neutralizing agent, coupling agent
  • Coating & inks: curing agents, pigment dispersants, neutralizing agent
  • Foundry: catalysts in polyurethane cold box process
  • Monomers, Polymers and Rubber:
amines act as intermediates for a wide variety of monomers and polymers in a wide range of applications such as resins, plastics, rubber and textiles
  • Water treatment: boiler protection from carbonic acidity and oxygen
  • Oil and Petrochemicals industry:
Emulsion breakers, antioxidants, sludge prevention, lubricant additives and gas treatment
  • Corrosion inhibition:
Metalworking fluids, lubricants, coatings. Corrosion inhibitors which contain nitrogen, obtained by an amine, are used in many industries.

This is a non exhaustive list of the possible applications for ARKEMA amines.
