Research and Development

R&D is a key component of Arkema’s strategy. We currently have approximately 1,100 researchers in 7 research and development centers in France, the United States and Japan.

With an R&D budget in excess of 2.5% of revenue, we are committed to research programs that produce ever more innovative, environmentally friendly and safe products, optimize our production plant performance and develop new processes.

R&D tailored to the specific needs of our activities

Vinyl Products

R&D’s goal is to improve the quality of existing products and increase plant reliability and productivity through next-generation processes. One example is the development of new diaphragm electrolysis processes, leading to major strides in industrial hygiene and reduced energy consumption.

Industrial Chemicals

The continuous improvement of manufacturing processes to make them safer, more competitive and more efficient is a paramount goal. For example, Industrial Chemicals R&D uses new feedstocks and tests new catalysts and reactors. Development teams are also working on new applications for products created by R&D.

Performance Products

Performance Products R&D focuses primarily on expanding the line by adding new, innovative products and tailoring product performance and function to market requirements. A large share of its budget is allocated to technical support for Arkema customers.
An example of its R&D is the Kyoto Technical Center’s development of Pebax®, which helped fuel the success of high-performance thermoplastic elastomers in the upscale athletic shoe market.
